Wesland Boerdery has made a long-term commitment to sustainable, responsible farming — optimizing water and energy use, building healthy soil, and powering our operations with renewable energy backed by battery storage. We farm efficiently and responsibly: drip irrigation with soil-moisture probes and Variable Speed Drive pumps minimize water and electricity use, while cover crops, on-farm compost, returned vine cuttings and Indian Runner ducks build living, healthy soil. Careful spray monitoring, insect traps, biological pest control and full block-to-box traceability complete our approach.
Our renewable energy journey continues in partnership with Electro Africa. Phase 1 introduced a solar solution with battery storage to improve reliability and reduce grid dependency for our packhouse. In Phase 2 we are increasing solar capacity, upgrading infrastructure, and preparing the energy backbone for a new packhouse under development.
We use drip irrigation rather than micro-irrigation, allowing us to optimize our water usage. Soil probes measure ground moisture so we know exactly how much water to apply. Our pump stations use Variable Speed Drive systems, meaning the pumps supply the lines with only the water required — saving a significant amount of electricity.
We use a branch cutter that shreds the vine cuttings after pruning and returns this organic material directly to the ridges. Cover crops are planted to promote greater microbial life in the soil, and we pack hay onto the ridges to create an environment where microbes thrive. Indian Runner ducks control snails in the vineyards, and the farm generates its own compost to return beneficial organisms — such as earthworms — to the soil.
All our spraying tractors are fitted with systems that trace spray application and monitor speed. We use insect traps to monitor mealybug and fruit fly before taking action, and apply biological pest control — particularly for mealybug — to reduce the need for spraying wherever possible. When our grapes reach their destination, we can trace every box back through the packing process, from block to box.
In partnership with Electro Africa, we have installed a solar power system with battery storage at our packhouse. Phase 1 improved reliability and reduced our dependency on the grid; Phase 2 is now increasing our solar capacity, upgrading infrastructure, and preparing the energy backbone for a new packhouse under development.
